Mawasim Organic Supermarket & Cafe

Mawasim is an organic food store and supermarket in Abu Dhabi. This was their first branch. The one-story building already existed so they renovated the exteriors and completely redid and interiors.

It was a great concept for me to work on. As the name would suggest they wanted an organic design with lots of natural elements, colors, and materials with a little bit of an industrial and vintage yet modern look. And so it seemed rather clear during our meetings that we needed to be using concrete for the flooring and some walls, reclaimed wood cladding for walls and the suspended ceiling, industrial lights, and inspired from their own farm design we used Areesh (palm tree leaves) for wooden panels in a rather modern way.

I also designed the exterior facades, the shop front, seating area, and the main entrance. I suggested reclaimed wooden tables with glass tops, and reclaimed wooden seat benches as well. A combination of concrete, grass, wooden steps for the landscape as well as trees and plants.

The cafe was to be done at a later stage outside the market. The cafe structure was to be mainly metal beams and glass panels from three sides inviting lots of natural light in. The interiors carried a lot of the design elements used in the market and landscaping, with vintage and industrial furniture pieces like the Emeco chairs.

The images below show the visuals prepared for the project as well as the actual space itself when finished.
